The Local SEO Checklist for Southeast Texas Small Businesses (2026)
The exact 12-step local SEO checklist we run for every Beaumont, Port Arthur, Orange, and Lake Charles client — the ones that move rankings in the Google Map Pack.
If you run a local business in Southeast Texas or Southwest Louisiana, the Google Map Pack — those three map results at the top — is the single most valuable piece of real estate on the internet. Here's the exact checklist we run for every local SEO client.
1. Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile
Every field. Categories, services, service areas, hours, attributes, photos, description. Half-filled profiles get half-ranked.
2. Nail your primary category
Your primary category is the single biggest ranking factor for GBP. 'Plumber' and 'Emergency plumber' rank for very different searches. Pick the one that matches the money keyword.
3. Add every relevant secondary category
Google lets you add up to 10. Use them. Each additional category opens up more searches you can appear for.
4. NAP consistency across the web
Name, Address, Phone — identical everywhere. Google, Yelp, Bing, Apple Maps, Facebook, industry directories, your own website footer. Any mismatch confuses Google and hurts rankings.
5. Get on the top 20 local citations
- Google Business Profile
- Bing Places
- Apple Maps / Apple Business Connect
- Yelp
- Better Business Bureau
- Yellow Pages
- Foursquare / Factual
- Nextdoor
- Industry-specific (Angi, HomeAdvisor, Healthgrades, Avvo, etc.)
6. Add city and service-area pages to your website
A single 'Service Areas' page listing 20 cities does very little. A dedicated page per major city (Beaumont, Port Arthur, Orange, Lake Charles) with real, unique content ranks. This is where most Southeast Texas businesses leave money on the table.
7. Optimize your homepage and service pages for local intent
Every title tag, H1, and meta description should include the service AND the primary city. 'Roof Repair in Beaumont, TX' beats 'Roof Repair' every time for local search.
8. Get real Google reviews — consistently
Not a flood of 20 reviews in one week, then nothing for six months. Consistent monthly review flow signals Google that you're actively serving customers. Aim for 5–10 new reviews per month.
9. Respond to every review
Every one. Positive with a short thank-you, negative with a professional response. Google reads the responses and factors engagement into rankings.
10. Post to Google Business Profile weekly
GBP posts are basically free ads at the top of search results. Promos, updates, new services, events. Weekly, minimum.
11. Add LocalBusiness schema to your website
Structured data tells Google exactly what your business is, where it's located, and what it offers. It's invisible to visitors but huge for search engines.
12. Track your local rankings monthly
You can't improve what you don't measure. Track your top 20 keywords in Google Maps and organic search from your actual service area — not just from your office IP.
The compound effect
None of these are secret. What matters is doing all 12 — consistently — over 6+ months. That's what separates the businesses in the Map Pack from the ones stuck on page 3.
