The Google Business Profile Setup Guide That Actually Ranks (2026)

A step-by-step Google Business Profile setup guide for local businesses in Southeast Texas — every field, every category, every photo, in the right order.

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single most valuable free marketing asset your business has. Done right, it drives more calls, direction requests, and website clicks than most paid ad campaigns. Done wrong — or half-done — you're invisible in the Map Pack. Here's the exact setup order we use for every client.

1. Claim (or create) the profile from the right account

Use a business Google account you actually own — not a personal Gmail tied to an employee. If ownership ever needs to transfer, you'll thank yourself. Search your business name in Google Maps first to make sure a profile doesn't already exist.

2. Verify by the fastest method available

Video verification is now the default. Have your storefront, signage, and a piece of mail with your address ready before you start. Rushing this step is the #1 reason profiles get stuck in 'pending' for weeks.

3. Pick the perfect primary category

Your primary category outweighs almost every other GBP ranking factor. Search the exact phrase customers use — 'roofing contractor' beats 'roofer', 'HVAC contractor' beats 'air conditioning repair service' in most markets. Test it: search the category name in Maps and see who ranks.

4. Add every relevant secondary category (up to 9)

Every secondary category is a new set of searches you can appear for. A plumber might add: emergency plumber, drain cleaning service, water heater repair, gas installation service. Don't stuff — but don't leave slots empty either.

5. Complete every business info field

  • Business name — exactly as it appears on your signage. No keyword stuffing (Google will suspend for it).
  • Address — matches your website footer, Yelp, Facebook, everything. Byte-for-byte.
  • Service area — if you go to customers, list every city you serve.
  • Hours — including holiday hours. Empty hours look closed.
  • Phone — a local number beats a toll-free every time for local ranking.
  • Website — link directly to the most relevant page (home or a service page).

6. Write the description like a human, not a robot

750 characters. Lead with what you do, who you serve, and where. Weave in 2–3 natural keyword phrases. No links, no phone numbers (Google strips them). Read it out loud — if it sounds like a brochure from 2004, rewrite it.

7. Add products AND services

Most businesses skip this. Every service you list becomes crawlable content Google can match to searches. Include name, description, and price (or 'starts at') where you can. This is free real estate.

8. Upload photos in the right categories

  • Logo — square, on white background
  • Cover — the wide banner shot
  • Interior — 3–5, well-lit, no fisheye
  • Exterior — daytime, signage visible, from multiple angles
  • Team — real faces, not stock
  • At work — before/after, in-progress, finished projects
  • Product — every major offering

Aim for 25+ photos at launch, then 2–4 new photos per month forever. Photo freshness is a real ranking signal.

9. Set up messaging and booking

Turn on chat if you'll respond within 24 hours (Google will disable it if you don't). If you take appointments, connect a booking provider. Both features increase engagement, which increases rankings.

10. Add attributes that actually apply

'Women-owned', 'Veteran-owned', 'LGBTQ+ friendly', 'Wheelchair accessible', 'Free Wi-Fi', 'Appointment required' — every relevant attribute helps customers filter and helps Google understand your business.

11. Turn on Q&A — and seed it

You can ask AND answer your own questions. Pre-load the 5 questions customers actually ask ('Do you offer free estimates?', 'What areas do you serve?', etc.). Answer them clearly. This owns the 'People also ask' surface for your business.

12. Publish your first 5 posts on day one

Posts show up directly in your Map Pack listing. Start with: an intro/welcome post, a top service, a current offer, a customer story, and a call-to-action. Then keep posting weekly forever.

13. Kick off a review flow immediately

Grab your short review link (from the GBP dashboard) and text it to your 10 most recent happy customers. Getting your first 10 reviews within the first 30 days signals Google that this is a real, active business.

14. Connect Google Business Profile to Google Search Console

Verify your website in Search Console using the same Google account. It doesn't directly boost GBP rankings, but it lets Google connect your website authority to your profile — which absolutely does.

The maintenance rhythm

  • Weekly: 1 new post, respond to all new reviews and Q&A
  • Monthly: 2–4 new photos, review your insights, refresh your offer
  • Quarterly: audit categories, services, attributes, hours

That's it. No secret hack, no gray-hat trick — just doing all of it, and keeping it fresh. If you'd rather have us run this for your business, our local SEO packages start at $250/month and are month-to-month. Book a free consult and we'll audit where your profile stands today.
